Eckhart Tolle is one of my favourite teachers, and through his books and videos I learned the power of the present moment in sales and how to be present more consistently. When I first started out in sales I use to worry about marketshare, competition, or scrapping around to close a deal. But when I learned the power of the present moment in sales, the results were staggering.
Being present is the essence of mindful sales
Sales is about your customer but it starts with you. And being present, that is, being aware of your thoughts and your surroundings, is the route to serving instead of selling. Because most of us are living day-to-day in our head, that is, our attention is on our stream of useless thinking. You know what I mean, right? For example when you walk to the tube, you’re thinking; thinking about something that happened 10 years ago, worrying about tomorrow, angry about a certain email…etc.etc. In your head, totally unaware of your surrounds. Next time you go for a walk, watch people; sometimes you can see them move their lips or they’re staring at the ground because they’re thinking.
Most people, when they sell, are still in their head, worrying about lack, limitation and competition. You can’t possibly help your prospects get what they need because you’re too concerned with yourself, getting the deal, or closing the sale. And people feel your energy, whether you believe it or not – it’s just physics.
Serve your prospects
However when you are present you can truly serve people, because you’re operating from a state of humility, abundance, and joy. When you are present, you come from a place of abundance and you can put your needs aside and truly serve your prospects. You will listen instead of wondering when you can start your pitch; you will look for ways to help them instead of scheme how you can get a quick deal from them.
In this video Eckhart gives us practical tips on how to be present. Hope you enjoy it as much as I did.
